Traditional curatorial notions of researching, selecting and articulating are increasingly under threat from algorithmic approaches to gathering artefacts, epitomised by online efforts to tag artworks with searchable categories. Isn’t it time for critically minded curators to get to grips with the internet as a medium before it is subsumed by commercial interests?

While it is increasingly possible to live your entire social life online, the technology companies that enable such interactions have their own commercial imperatives for shaping that intercourse. How do artists such as Denis Knopf and Thomson & Craighead reflect the channelled experience that is being-online?

‘The parametrical narrowing that is a fundamental design feature of online services constricts the behaviours of those engaged in the practice of being-online (living socially on and through the web).’

Jonas Mekas, filmaker and poet originally from Lithuania who emigrated to New York in 1949,  is interviewed in the February 2013 edition of Art Monthly by Gilda Williams. Here his work and life are discussed with Professor Chris Townsend John Lowe and Kate Villevoye. At the time of this recording Mekas had four simultaneous retrospectives across the world and had just had his 90th Birthday.

John Douglas Millar discusses his feature article on Conceptual Writing and asks “Is writing still playing catch-up with art?” 

The term ‘Conceptual Writing’ was coined in 2003 to define literary works that may function as Conceptual Art, where the ideas behind the rule-based texts cannot be separated from the act of writing itself. But does this reliance on the act of authoring undermine the movement’s distanciating intentions?

‘Conceptual Writing might not seem particularly radical. After all, the Oulipo group have been experimenting with constraint-based writing for over 50 years and citation and appropriation are a fundamental of much modernist literature.’

Colin Perry discusses his review of Matthew Darbyshire at Zabludowicz Collection, London, The Associates at Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge, Theaster Gates at White Cube Bermondsey, London. He suggests that over these past few recessionary years, the context available for art in the UK has changed in line with public spending cuts. Creativity has increasingly sought a home in two types of well-funded organisations: private collectors’ kunsthalles, in which public and private functions mix freely; and the domestic houses and mansions managed by the heritage sector, in which art is programmed to respond to a permanent collection. But many artists show a deep ambivalence about such contexts.

In the digital age, however, the media of mundane labour and creative expression are often the same, so is it time for artists to reconceive the act of making and the making of the act?

The Artist as Cynic by Sophie J Williamson writes in praise of shamelessness.The scandalous Cynics of ancient Greece lived a life free from social restraint, speaking their minds – and indeed performing their bodily functions – in public and thereby exposing the hypocrisy and political motivations underlying most social conventions. Many performance artists, such as Marina Abramović and Cosey Fanni Tutti, have utilised similar techniques, but in an age of voluntary and involuntary surveillance through social networks, how have artists such as Christoph Schlingensief and Ai Weiwei tapped into the spirit of the Cynics for political protest?

Jennifer Thatcher and Morgan Quaintance bring their two texts from the September issue of Art Monthly together. Jennifer’s feature – a conversation with Tino Sehgal and Morgan’s review of Claire Bishop’s book Artificial Hells.

Tino Sehgal is a key figure in the rise of participatory art, using performers – or ‘interpreters’ – to engage with audience members. He discussed his current (Sept 2012)commission for Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall, his reliance on art galleries for context, the motivations driving his interpreters and his work’s avoidance of open-ended public engagement through a strict adherence to ‘the craft of composition’.

‘Unlike our name-badge culture of faux-intimacy (Hello, my name is Bob, how can I help you?), these interpreters remain anonymous. Yet that anonymity “paradoxically allows for greater intimacy”, Sehgal argues, “when you meet a stranger on a train, you can always say more.”‘

Morgan Quaintance wrote: ‘Claire Bishop explains that the dominance of ethical and moral judgement is killing aesthetic assessment in an “ethically charged climate in which participatory and socially engaged art has become largely exempt from art criticism”. This new binary (the ethical versus the aesthetic) replaces the passive-active conundrum as the new site of contention to be duked out in the participatory debate.’
