Art Monthly Talk Show 14th October 2013

This programme is based on two features from issue 370 October 2013 of Art Monthly

Post-racialism- by Morgan Quaintance who looks beyond identity constructs- ‘If identity is constructed, by whom is it constructed? Whom does it serve, and according to what ideological commitments? Seeking answers to these questions would at least open the way for analyses of black identity.’ The fight for identity and equal representation that so occupied the second post-colonial generation in the UK has been co-opted by the very forces that it was meant to combat. Isn’t it time this new black identity that the dominant ideology has constructed – depoliticised and consumerist – be shaken by those it claims to represent? He  discusses this with Dave Beech linking it with Dave’s feature The Art Anomaly on art’s economic exceptionalism. Since art operates at the limits of economic understanding, economists have been reduced to declaiming its seemingly ‘perverse’ irrationaility. Instead of such name calling, isn’t the art anomaly better understood as revealing a flaw in neoliberal economic ideologies? ‘It makes sense to see the apparently irrational choices of artists as exerting a counter-force on economic rationality which sets limits on its efficacy. Economic exceptionalism results from a range of limits placed on market forces by non-economic forces.’

The programme is hosted by Matt Hale who has worked at Art Monthly since 1991.

Women are still woefully under-represented in the art world argues Jennifer Thatcher

The recent resurgence of feminism has seen the art world again come under scrutiny over inequality. Forty years after the flourishing of the Women’s Liberation Movement, why is there still so far to go?

‘Positive discrimination is illegal in the UK, yet it astonishes me that trustees can look around a room and, where there are few or no women, not feel compelled to make changes.’

Chris Mc Cormack, Art Monthly’s Assistant Editor discusses a feature and a review from issue 369 July/August Art Monthly magazine with the authors.

Art & Politics

Which side is art on ask Dean Kenning and Margareta Kern

In the face of government austerity measures which have squeezed artists and public arts provision more than any other sector, an elite art world has continued to prosper. Isn’t it time that, in order to develop political agency in their work, artists begin to acknowledge this glaring dichotomy?

‘Can art act in opposition to neoliberal power and manifest values based in equality, commonality and solidarity? Or does art simply manifest and further the interests of a transnational capitalist class?’

Art Monthly Talk Show 12th August 2013

This is the second programme based on content from the July/August issue 368 of Art Monthly.

Patricia Bickers Editor of Art Monthly discusses her feature “Venice Inside Out”  on the real lines that divide insiders from outsiders

At the Venice Biennale, as elsewhere, curators are marshalling ‘outsiders’ and ‘real people’ for the benefit of curious spectacle-seekers. But isn’t such apparent inclusiveness simply a curtain that hides the persistent asymmetry of power?

‘Massimiliano Gioni’s aim of blurring “the line between professional artists and amateurs, outsiders and insiders”, wilfully ignores the real dividing lines between insiders and outsiders demonstrated everywhere in Venice: money, power and the right to self-determination.’

Patricia is joined by Chris McCormack Assistant Editor of Art Monthly as well as Daniella Rose King who reviewed The Alternative Guide to the Universe which was at the Hayward Gallery, London- another exhibition with Outsider Artists.

The programme is hosted by Matt Hale who has worked at Art Monthly since 1991.

Art Monthly Talk Show 8th July 2013

Art as Commodity as Art

Christopher Townsend discusses the legacy of the Pictures Generation and MTV

The Pictures Generation artists of the early 1980s – Robert Longo, Richard Prince, Cindy Sherman et al – who emerged just as MTV muscled up alongside the young field of video art, set about dissolving the boundaries between art and the techniques of mass culture. But by adopting forms that had been thoroughly co-opted by the engine of commercial production, was the space for critical subjectivity fatally compromised?

‘While Walter Benjamin and Theodor Adorno, inter alia, provide critiques of the desubjectivising effects of modernity through the individual’s separation from both culture and history as far back as the 1840s, I suggest that these effects achieve a particular specificity in the historical time and geographical space of the Pictures Generation and MTV.’

Sophie J Williamson on the case of Khaled Mohamed Saeed

Following Khaled Mohamed Saeed’s death at the hands of Egyptian police officers, his family’s decision to release a striking montage of photographs showing him before and after death catalysed mass protests and ultimately revolution. Does the subsequent proliferation of poster images through protestors’ networks highlight the urgent power of the image when embedded within grassroots movements?

‘The viral image is outside the scope of the law so it facilitates the construction of anonymous global networks and a shared history that political institutions are incapable of regulating.’

Art Monthly Talk Show 8th April 2013

Paul O’Kane, Mark Harris and Reuben Fowkes discuss their texts in the April 2013 issue of Art Monthly

Life and Death- Paul O’Kane on art and being. If art in secular societies plays some part in defining humanity, how have artists such as John Akomfrah, Nick Broomfield and Patrick Keiller met the challenges laid forth by globalisation’s increasingly pervasive and invasive brand of technocapitalism?

‘When, occasionally, the shameful excesses, inadequacies and inequalities underpinning consumerism are glimpsed in news media, these “shocking facts” become yet more fleeting images, commodified emotions of momentary indignation and injustice.’

Maja & Reuben Fowkes on the return of the East European. When the coalition government recently proposed running an anti-UK advertising campaign in Eastern Europe with the aim of discouraging immigration, it brought an outmoded cultural categorisation back to life. Perhaps Number 10 might have looked at the work of Adam Chodzko, Roman Ondák, Dan Perjovschi and Nedko Solakov before returning the generic ‘East European’ to the discourse around identity.

‘In the 2000s these artists were likely to feel at home in the post-identitarian circuits of a globalised art world which abandoned the cult of origins in favour of a universalist outlook, but now they are faced with the return of the East European.’

Mark Harris on  The Bride and the Bachelors: Duchamp with Cage, Cunningham, Rauschenberg and Johns at the Barbican, London in Spring 2013
