Hello GoodBye Show 4 June 2011: Serafina Steer and Lime-Headed Dog

This is the final episode of Hello GoodBye before we take our well earned Summer holiday!

This afternoon we welcome the return of two of the capital’s finest perpetrators of contemporary, abstract pop music; Serafina Steer & Lime Headed Dog.

Plus, we also have Matthew Reynolds & Hannah from the Ukulele emporium The Duke Of Uke discussing the fact that their shop is currently under threat of closure.

Multi-instrumentalist Serafina Steer was tutored by the living legend and sitar genius, Ravi Shankar. Serafina’s sublime song writing skills, spellbinding voice and supreme dexterity on the harp have justifiably found her gaining huge critical acclaim from an ever expanding group of admirers.

Lime Headed Dog combine abstract, cut and paste, free-form pop with surreal lyrical aplomb, the result of which is a vaguely unsettling and yet altogether thrilling and infectious wall of sound.

Tune in between noon and 1.30pm on 104.4 FM in Central London or on-line via: www.resonancefm.com

NB* The deXter Bentley Hello GoodBye Show will return to the airwaves on Saturday 3rd September 2011 @ 12 o’clock midday!

Well-turned out and industrious (check out their merchandising!) troubadours Skinjobs play bespoke one-song gigs, often mimed and at far-flung venues, car parks, forests and art galleries across Europe. Who knows what they will play for us in session today? Probably not even they do…

Hello GoodBye Show 21 May 2011: The Mekons and Irmin Schmidt

Post-punk iconoclasts The Mekons join us to perform live in session on Resonance FM this Saturday lunchtime.

With a new album (Ancient & Modern) set for imminent release plus a documentary in the pipeline by filmmaker Jon Angio (Revenge of The Mekons), the collective of artists and musicians that comprise The Mekons are thankfully showing no signs of shipping back to Venus. In 1978 The Mekons’ debut single ‘Never Been In A Riot’, was denied distribution by Rough Trade after they deemed it too lo-fi and scratchy for the common or garden post-punk punter, yet despite this ignominious beginning the group are currently in their 5th decade and still going strong. Tune in to hear their distinct brand of barnstorming, politically charged, country-punk music.

Plus an interview with Irmin Schmidt, ex-keyboard player of CAN who talks about Lost Tapes, the upcoming boxed set of unreleased archive recordings from the Krautrock legends and his own soundtrack recordings.

Hello GoodBye Show 14 May 2011: The Wave Pictures and Broken Shoulder

Returning to the show once more are the scintillating London based trio The Wave Pictures, while making a debut on the show we also have Broken Shoulder.

The Wave Pictures are a prolific London based trio who play pop music that is infused with a healthy, heady rush of youthful abandon. Frontman David Tattershall has a distinctly idiosyncratic stream of consciousness quality to his lyrics that is both melodic and playful. The group conjure up a sound that is slightly reminiscent of the New York new wave scene of the late ‘70’s (with both early Television and Talking Heads springing to mind.) The band are currently undertaking a nationwide tour of the UK to promote their LP ‘Beer In The Breakers’ (Moshi Moshi)

Broken Shoulder is the aching pseudonym of Neil Debnam from Fighting Kites. Conceived when he was out of action with a broken shoulder, Debnam lent in the darker shade of his influences; electronic and noise records from the likes of Tim Hecker, Ashtray Navigations, Core Of The Coalman and a wealth of Japanese experimental/improvisational music (Chihei Hatakeyama, Taj Mahal Travellers, Himeno Sayaka). His debut LP “Broken Shoulderrr” (Audio Anti-Hero) is a Lo-Tron collection of noises, ditties and misplaced notes sewn together by fuzz and feedback. It’s a unique record that evolves with each listen and has a shelf life longer than UHT milk.

Hello GoodBye Show 30 April 2011: The Choo-Choo Trains and The Windsors

The honeymoon is over!

Performing live in session on Hello GoodBye this afternoon are The Windsors and The Choo Choo Trains.

The Windsors rose from the ashes of the legendary Kenny Process Team. Simon King (guitar), Matthew Armstrong (bass), Phil Bartai (keys) and Paul May (drums) play jewel-like tunes written specifically for the band by Kevin Plummer, the genius tunesmith behind KPT. “The music of Plummer and cohorts remains of interest to fans of forward-looking electric guitar music with a rock base, and stylistically is somewhere between the precision control of surf rock groups such as the Ventures and the almost classical compositions Captain Beefheart created in collaboration with guitarists such as Zoot Horn Rollo and Gary Lucas.” Eugene Chadbourne

The Choo Choo Trains is the most static band in England, the best band in the world. They are Veronica, Emma and Sarihi and they play music for the heart and soul. They have supported bands like Television Personalities and Wet Dog and have also received much praise from Kurt Cobain’s wheelchair pushing friend Everett True. The Choo Choo Trains is dedicated to Elvis Presley, the King of Rock’n’Roll.

Brixton and Bristol are both represented in equal measure this afternoon on Hello GoodBye, from the West Country we have Siddy Bennett and from South East London The No Frills Band.

The South London Press recently described The No Frills Band as ‘ramshackle folksy Brixtonites’, the group play Irish, Welsh, English and Scottish tunes, American old time, bluegrass and western swing, Greek stuff, Turkish stuff, French tunes, Yiddish tunes, East European tunes and Scandinavian tunes, and some old country songs.

Siddy Bennett is poignant, poetic and often lyrically compared to the greats of Laura Marling and Sandy Denny. Her delivery, assured with the musicianship of her exceptional (violin included) band, ranges from upbeat, raucous, cider-infused festival dance music to epic, thought provoking folk ballads.

Hello GoodBye Show 2 April 2011: Comus and Jack Allett

Live in session on the show this Saturday lunchtime are the original dark-folk progenitors Comus, plus the virtuoso guitar skills of Jack Allett (formerly known as Spoono)

Emerging from David Bowie’s ‘Arts Lab’ in suburban Beckenham (South East London) at the tail end of the ’60s, Comus were the poison-cure to flower-power.

With a mutual appreciation for The Velvet Underground, it is hardly surprising that founding members Roger Wootton & Glenn Goring garnered inspiration from the darker side of life, with murder, rape and madness the preferred subject matter.

Like a musical incarnation of ‘Seahenge‘ the band bore fruit from deep within the underground folk scene, while the roots to their name were found in the upper reaches of Greek mythology and the writing of the 17th century English poet John Milton. Comus’ legacy grows more acute with each passing decade, with Swedish Death-Metal outfit Opeth and British Apocalyptic-Folk group Current 93 heading the roll call of admirers.

Jack Allett is a 26 year old guitarist from Camberwell, South London. As a member of Towering Breaker and under his erstwhile pseudonym, Spoono, he has – over the past 6 years or so – released LPs, 7?s and CDrs on a plethora of labels (inc. Blackest Rainbow, Great Pop Supplement, Chocolate Monk, Psykick Dancehall…) In 2011 he has a solo LP – the first under his real name – planned for release on Blackest Rainbow, and a collaborative LP with Cam Deas to be issued on Present Time Exercises.

Also, journalist / musician Neil Walsh conducts an interview with the author Jeanette Leech about her new book, Seasons They Change: The Story of Acid & Psychedelic Folk (Jawbone Press)
