Discussion around particpatory art has missed one important category of engagement. Where is the analysis of artists – such as Manon de Boer and Marjolijn Dijkman – who purposefully cue up and then direct the individual viewer’s imagination?

John Douglas Millar discusses his review of Gerhard Richter: Panorama at Tate Modern .

The Made v The Readymade

Mark Prince on the resistance of objects

In the story of recent sculpture, making has given way to assemblages and installations of known objects that carry narrative overtones – but there are artists who resist this trajectory. If the readymade reduces the object to a transferrable set of signs, how have artists such as Phyllida Barlow, Tony Cragg, Richard Deacon and, more recently, Nairy Baghramian, Michael Dean and Alexander Heim short-circuited this current?

‘If art is expected to function as a vehicle for a set of branded narratives that should be as summarisable as possible from a digital remove, “eliminating recognisable things” might be a form of resistance.’

In this programme  writer Laura McLean-Ferris and writer,musician and curator  Morgan Quaintance discuss Laura’s feature from the October issue 351 of Art Monthly.

Dissolution– on the internet, sculpture and the body in pieces. A new generation of artists is tackling an age-old modernist subject with a post-internet mindset, asking not what we might fear from future bodily dissolution but how we should celebrate its existing effects.

‘Dissolution has been heralded, positively and negatively, incessantly over history. Over the past few years, however, a skewed sense of pace has developed: did we miss it actually happening?’

They also discuss Morgan’s review of Digital and Other Virtualities: Renegotiating the Image a book edited by Griselda Pollock and Anthony Bryant which finds virtual reality reinvigorated by new texts. ‘Cyberspace, the once maddeningly ubiquitous neologism coined in William Gibson’s 1984 novel Neuromancer, has, since its heyday in the early 1990s, been relegated to the bargin bin of passé cultural terminology, along with its sibling virtual reality.’

‘While academic and creative disciplines cross pollinate in the art world, they seem increasingly estranged in the literary world. The result is that the influence of experimental and avant-garde fiction waxes in the world of art while it wanes in the world of publishing.’

Wakefield’s new Barbara Hepworth museum gives visitors a slice of mid-century British modernism, but how can we comprehend this historical period when it is refracted – via contemporary culture – through late capitalism’s self mythologising?

 

‘The era of mid-century modernism and modernity is lost to us now, its Utopias are as unattainable as the archaic ages of Knossos and Troy, and presented to us in fragments gathered from the archaeological excavation of what was to come rather than the digging up of what really happened.’

Photography as Work

Art Monthly feature Photography as Work written by Stephanie Schwartz is discussed with Matt Hale.
