Grizzle: “Best Of” Podcast

Grizzle was created to provide exposure for underground producers who’s styles are not catered for on mainstream radio. To gain skills in programme making, broadcasting and promote their work to a wider audience. Many thanks to Resonance FM and EMS synths and awards for all who supported us and everyone who contributed. The series ran for six months and featured new uk hiphop, breakbeat and spoken word. This is a compilation of series highlights featuring a mix of exclusives created for the show, featured artists and interviews.

Hooting Yard: A Series of Unfortunate Cows

Misfortune can strike a cow out of the blue. To give but one example, the field in which it is standing may become flooded after heavy rainfall or, if not flooded exactly, then pitted with many, many puddles. No cow likes to stand in water, so such a circumstance must be counted a misfortune.

The cow in the puddle, however, is une jolie vache compared to the cow which inattentively wanders onto some railway tracks and then comes to a halt. Continuing across the tracks would be the wiser option, for as long as the cow remains where it is, it is an imperilled cow. But unlike owls, cows are not noted for wisdom. The imperilled cow on the railway tracks may suffer the misfortune of being killed by a runaway locomotive without a cow-conscious driver at the helm. I am not sure ‘helm’ is the correct word for the little cabin in which a train driver, cow-conscious or otherwise, sits or stands, but let that pass. What we can say with certainty is that a motionless cow in the path of a runaway train will suffer the greatest of misfortunes, that is, a violent death. By comparison, the previous cow, the one standing in the puddle, is almost as happy a cow as the laughing one that mysteriously appears on the wrappers of a brand of processed cheese triangles in this country, and perhaps in other countries too.

the heard world 36: FM Radio and misogyny

the first half of the show is my own take on commercial FM Radio, and the likely shitely music you can expect to hear. i guess i could have developed this more, but before i can the show takes a gradual slide into pure self-absorbed, drunken mysogyny recorded in the back alley of a central square bar. this is tempered with a hacked music box hooked up to a piezo driven homemade slinky reverb unit and ray wilson’s weird sound generator. our only hope is skrillmeadow, who is in my opinion is the only valid reason to log onto myspace. if only there were more like him. the other three discernable songs are dirty rituals, sewage and sexist pig, all originals circa 2002-3. enjoy this one, quality is fleeting.

the heard world 34

this show is about my cd dropping experience, and is meant to be similar in style to the old hellebore shews. it fails at this as it is riddled with inside jokes that just aren’t that funny. it features a malformed english accent, some stupendous quality rambling, a lot of noise (as usual) and a brief but special message from a circuit bent talk ‘n’ learn alphabet toy. this little tidbit didn’t make it into the show, but the very first location at which i dropped a CD burned down that night:

oh yeah, no one was hurt. no word on the CD, though. If you would like your own copy of the CD, then please let me know – pkemble@gmail.com

the heard world 33: a very tonal affair

i’ve been too hard on you listeners, too harsh with noises. so, this week, enjoy this very tonal and hopefully soothing show. this show features some bells, band rehersal, some experiments and possibly the first ever neo-classical mash up. please leave comments with pkemble@gmail.com.

the heard world 31: a collection of noises

beautiful noises in my eyes…er, ears. how much fun can one person have with a hacked tape player, a children’s metal bar keyboard, some audio software, a homemade cracklebox, a guitar, abominaclavia, and a dating show on at 330am?!?!! listen and find out!!!!! OMG TOTALLY!!!

the glamorous life of circuit bending

you’ve read about them in magazines. you’ve seen them on billboards and at fashion show premieres. now you can penetrate the seedy underbelly of the exciting world of circuit bending! hear what happens when naughty little casio sa-35 is modified to “short out” and encouraged to “just go nuts”. you won’t want to miss what happens with it’s freshly soldered electrodes! they’re dimes! but you didn’t hear that from us!

Hooting Yard: Through Clenched Teeth

Through clenched teeth, in municipal yet verdant parkland, sprawled on grass, Blodgett recited the alphabet.

“A is for vinegar,” he grunted, “B is for worms, C is for villains swinging from the gallows…”

A little voice inside Blodgett’s head told him to stop. He knew he had got it wrong again. He rolled himself down the gentle incline of the grass until he came to rest. Then he sat up and picked flecks of plant-life out of his hair. The sun was shining but the park was almost deserted. He peered across the green towards the choc ice tent, and licked his lips. Would he splash out on a choc ice? Blodgett fumbled in his pockets for change, but they were empty. He wondered if there was anybody in charge of the choc ice tent. Perhaps it, too, was deserted, and the choc ices were there for the taking. It was more likely that there would be some kind of automatic choc ice dispenser, but Blodgett knew he could jimmy it open with his jimmy. He recalled that he had left his jimmy at home, in a cupboard, with his empty yohoort cartons. Blodgett always pronounced “yogurt” as “yohoort”, he was that kind of guy. He lay down again and closed his eyes and clenched his teeth and made yet another attempt at the alphabet…
