Hello GoodBye Show 19 November 2011: Horse Brothers and Trond K & the Serious Issues

Performing live in session under this autumnal noonday sun are the London based duo Horse Brothers and the Norwegian outlaw outfit Trond K & the Serious Issues.

Visit our homepage * Twitter * Facebook

The Horse Brothers kick up a little dust as they stampede over the airwaves of the Capital with their thunderous tethering of Punk & Blues. A throbbing, pulsating, rhythmic morass of influences spring to mind, from Howlin’ Wolf via Golden Earring and all the way to the abstract rantings of Mark E. Smith. Vocalist & guitarist Daniel Stewart is aided and abetted in his quest by the gloriously familiar thud of ace sticks-man Dave Barbe (aka Dave Barbarossa, formerly the drummer with Adam & the Antz on the classic Dirk Wears White Sox LP, and of course the 1980s Burundi-pop pacesetters Bow Wow Wow)

Trond K is a sinner / songwriter based in Bergen, Norway. He has been involved in a number of sideprojects, including MiNdFiSh, Bones Sweet Bones, Onkel Nevø, Happy Åndalsnes and more recently Adolf Ibsen. He is currently performing frequently in his home town of Ålesund, and in Bergen. Widely influenced by the 70’s outlaw country scene, the English pubrock scene and the post-punk new romantics his songwriting and performances spans from the most intense and soulful acoustic numbers to the half-novelty loud and confronting rock/cabaret-songs.

Hello GoodBye Show 12 November 2011: Patrik FitzGerald, Date Palms, The Honeycombs

As usual we have an exciting show planned this weekend; with live music on offer from the Joe Meek produced, 60s chart-toppers The Honeycombs, plus the original Punk poet Patrik Fitzgerald and as if that wasn’t already mouthwatering enough, we also have a pre-recorded interview and live concert recording from the West Coast psychedelic duo Date Palms.

Visit our homepage * Twitter * Facebook

THE HONEYCOMBS
The Honeycombs’ 1964 debut single Have I The Right? was one of just three singles to be produced by Joe Meek in his flat-cum-studio on Holloway Road which hit the UK number 1 spot (the others being John Layton’s Johnny Remember me and Telstar by the Tornados). Today on the show, a new line-up put together by founding member, guitarist Martin Murray, will play live in session. Expect reminiscences of Joe and his legendary studio by the first Hello GoodBye Show guests to be genuine chart-toppers.

PATRIK FITZGERALD
Acoustic punk troubadour fondly remembered for songs such as “Safety Pin Stuck In My Heart” and “Backstreet Boys”, independent releases which led to a short-lived deal with Polydor in 1979. His early records were short, sharp and sarcastic slices of life bashed out on a battered guitar and for an artist who never sold huge numbers of records, the extent of Patrik’s influence is remarkable – recent years have seen the completion of both a feature-length documentary film and a tribute album. He also has a new album in the pipeline entitled Subliminal Alienation to be released next year.

DATE PALMS
Based in California, Date Palms is a project of classically educated avant-garde musicians Gregg Kowalski and Marielle Jakobsons. Their latest LP Honey Devash on Mexican Summer records, is comprised of two, side long compositions, which take influences from classical Indian music, psychedelia, spaced out jazz, Krautrock and their California home. The lush, ambient soundscapes are fashioned from a wide array wires and boxes, which recalls the method of those founding fathers of electro the Silver Apples. Today we broadcast a recording from their concert this week at Cafe Oto.

Today on Hello GoodBye we open our doors to Renu and No Cars.

Multi-instrumentalist, percussionist, songwriter & composer Renu recently self-released her debut LP ‘Love from London’ to critical acclaim. The album was recorded over a two year period in London, Paris, Warsaw & Toronto and features a host of collaborators, including Seb Rochford (Polar Bear / Acoustic Ladyland) and Anna Tabbush (Tabbush English Folk Family.) The influence of Gainsbourg, Drake & Morricone can all be heard in the cinematic scope of Renu’s music, all swept along with the atmospheric combination of viola and theramin.

No Cars are an all-girl Japanese trio who first met and formed in London. They have declared themselves the new ‘Queens of Cute‘ and perform delightful Bubblegum-Pop ditties about bananas, octopuses and Sellotape.

Hello GoodBye Show 29 October 2011: Upset the Rhythm and Eternal Tapestry

Today we focus our attention on the record label Upset the Rhythm, with featured live sessions from Way Through & Vice Cooler.

Upset the Rhythm began to promote live concerts in London in 2004 and has consequently helped to transform a once a sterile and uninspiring music scene, into the thriving and truly innovative platform that we are able to behold today. UtR has since metamorphosed into an equally seminal record label and continues to lend its unwavering support to a massive groundswell of like minded and groundbreaking international artists.

Plus, a live set and interview with Eternal Tapestry (recorded this week at Corsica Studios in Elephant & Castle)

Hailing from Portland, Oregon, Eternal Tapestry make music which is loosely structured, densely layered and spontaneously composed. Massively prolific, they have released two LPs on Thrill Jockey this year alone, Beyond the 4th Door and Night Gallery, a collaboration with Sun Araw, which was improvised for a radio session at this year’s South By South West festival. And that’s not to mention two self-released tour cassettes.

Hello GoodBye Show 22 October 2011: Band of Holy Joy, Agathe Max and Trees & the Slipway

The Hello GoodBye Show enjoys a little inter-station, cross pollination this afternoon, with Mining For Gold host Johny Brown experiencing life from the other side of the control desk, performing live in session with his folk-punk outfit Band Of Holy Joy.

Also, making their live radio debut we have the psych-pop trio Trees & the Slipway. Plus a live gig recording from Agathe Max.

Band Of Holy Joy are fronted by Johny Brown and have been going – on and off – for nigh on 30 years now. They play punk infused folk music, the current (and rather scintilating) results of which, can soon be heard on their forthcoming album ‘How To Kill A Butterfly’ (released on Exotic Pylon Records on 28th October)

Plus, refracted through the psychedelic environs of Tamworth and Liverpool, then heading down to London when right and ready, the trio of Matthew Lees (Vocals, keyboard and guitar), Joss Cope (Vocals and bass) and Stephen Wood (Vocals, guitar) formed TREES AND THE SLIPWAY. They play guitar/Casio comedown anthems for the dispossessed, Kraut-y stompers for the still-flying, and in between, songs about mad kings and more earth(l)y things… all shot through with the outsider micro-cubed raga-pop sensibility that you will come to know and love…

Violinist Agathe Max uses loops and distortion to create densely layered ambient music which is at one moment delicate and orchestral, and the next visceral abstract noise. Agathe was in the UK from her native Lyon for two shows recently and on today’s show we bring you a live recording from her performance at XOYO.

Hello GoodBye 15 October 2011: Purling Hiss, The Protagonists of David Gadsdon and Simon Stanley Ward

Live music in the studio today from Simon Stanley Ward and Protagonists of David Gadsdon, plus a live recording from Purling Hiss.

Simon Stanley Ward is a 24 year old English Country Music singer / songwriter from London, his newly released CD “Myself to Blame” is currently getting rave reviews on the UK’s thriving Americana grapevine.

Protagonists of David Gadsdon is a punchy, mock-bop recitative bunch. They play the spoken characters of David Gadsdon with drums, bass, sax, and detailed odds-and-ends. This is the first ever live performance of Doom Radio, releasing the babblistic world of Reginald Ffolkes, plus a bag of others.

Started as a solo project of the 4-track cassette recordings of Mike Polizze, Purling Hiss have quickly released a string of LPs and EPs on a series of labels, including Chicago’s Permanent Records. Polizze’s music is raw and unedited, the music is free of structure, Polizze values the idea over creating a polished product. Zapoppin’ are the key proponent of the powerskiffle genre. Thomas G.J. Sharpe and Luke Richards on banjo, harmonium and drums straddling sinister pop, awkward croon and upbeat folk. They have entertained audiences from Penzance to Berlin, summoning great intensity from the most meagre of instruments.

The band have been noted for their ‘black humour and obtuse lyrical themes’ by Clash and in 2010 were said that they ‘could be the face of a new strain of folk once everyone has recovered from their Mumford measles’ by 247 Magazine.
