OST 21.01.2012 – Fred Judd, Ian Helliwell & Public Information

Soundtracks, library and television music with Jonny Trunk. Today Ian Helliwell is coming onto the OST Show. Ian lives in Brighton, is somewhat of an archivist and dare we say it, a polymath. He has spent the last few years, investigating (amongst many other things) the life and work of a certain F.C. Judd. Frederick Judd was responsible for some very early electronic music in the UK, wrote extensively on the subject and much of his musical work was issued on the Studio G library label. Ian has also made a full length film about this great, inventive man, ‘Practical Electronics’ and a new compilation of his Judd’s work ‘Electronics Without Tears’ is about to be released on the rather marvellous Public Information label. And pretty fabulous they both are too. The stage is set for a journey into the deeply strange and utterly wondrous soundworld. And don’t be fooled by the skip in the first few seconds, this is actually a lovely high-quality 320kbps mp3 file, which as you will know is CD quality. We really are too good to you…

OST 19.11.2011- Alan McKinnon

Soundtracks, Library Music and all that jazz with Jonny Trunk. Today’s special guest is Alan McKinnon, ace record collector. He’s come all the way from Lewisham with a sack full of decidedly groovy and obscure jazz records, some of which even Jonny isn’t familiar with (not that he’ll admit it). There’s also a healthy dose of ‘pancake angst’ and the usual extremely silly competition, this week mixing films and clothes. Get Cardi, anyone?

OST 20.08.2011 – Morricone POP!

Soundtracks, library and television music hosted by Jonny Trunk. Today – Morricone Pop! We examine exceptionally rare Morricone collaborations. All non soundtrack works, these superb records date from 1958 and run through to about 1965, crossing from classic Italain pop to jazz and more experimental recordings. We’ll also be playing the rarely heard Pastures OF Plenty, the 1962 pop vocal by Pete Tevis that was to become A Fistful Of Dollars three years later. Result!

Incidentally, sorry this week’s podcast isn’t a bit more Christmassy. Robin The Fog popped down to the OST archive to try and find something a bit more seasonal, but then left his USB stick at the Resonance Christmas party. So you’ll just have to slap this one on while sitting around the festive table instead. A pretty decent compromise, don’t you think?

Happy Christmas, OST fans!

OST 12.11.2011 – Adrian Corker

Soundtracks, library and television music hosted by Jonny Trunk. Special guest today is Adrian Corker, musician and film music composer. He has collaborated with, amongst others, Peter Greenaway and Michael Nyman, and has written and composed for over 15 films. His latest work is the soundtrack to acclaimed documentary Way OF The Morris, a soundtrack that is released in November. And in the usual combination of sublime and ridiculous, there’s cheap laughs to be had in another classic competition – Films and chocolate.
We do have fun on this show, don’t we? Don’t we, though?

OST 18.06.2011 – Crime Jazz Special

Evenin’ all. I was proceeding down Borough High Street in a leisurely manner on the afternoon of June 18th, when I spotted the Defendant Jonny Trunk of 999 Letsby Avenue, willfully engaging in a special Crime Jazz edition of the OST Show, featuring classic cues by Bernstein, Ellington, Waxman and a plenitude of others. I had no option other than to feel his collar.

Each week The OST Show welcomes a guest (a collector, composer, director, artist) or specialises in a specific film music genre or composer. Expect lively chat, competitions and anything from avant garde Morricone to Rock Hudson singing.

OST 10.02.2010 – Transmediale Special

This archive edition of the the OST Show from 2010 is broadcast live from the Transmediale Festival in Berlin. Expect some fine compositions from Germany’s finest film composers. As per usual, Herr Trunk poses another pithy quiz question….the OST quiz conundrum – songs that are appropriate, or inappropriate, to listen to in a lavatory. You can take the seedy Englishman out of England, but…

OST 19.04.2011 – Julie Andrews / The Sound Of Music Special

OST is a weekly programme is dedicated to film music, TV music, library music and related recordings, and is hosted by Jonny Trunk. In this archive edition from 2008, Jonny is (entirely predictably) excited by the release of Julie Andrew’s memoir of her pre-Sound Of Music years, and so has prepared an entire programme of Sound Of Music Music, either from the film itself or covered by a multitude of artists. Even that Sun-Ra fellow. And not quite as cute and fluffy as you might think.

OST 02.11.2011 – X-Ray Eyes Special

This weekly programme is dedicated to film music, TV music, library music and related recordings, and is hosted by Jonny Trunk. Each week The OST Show welcomes a guest (a collector, composer, director, artist) or specialises in a specific film music genre or composer. Today Jonny is proud to be able to play the first ever full recording of Les Baxter’s score to The Man With X Ray Eyes. A mixture of exotics, oddness and bizarre instrumentation, this superb sci fi horror score for Corman’s 1963 classic (also known simply as “X”) is well worth the 48 year wait. He also has an unreleased Schifrin score but you’ll have to tune in to hear all about it!

OST 25.06.11 – Dominic Glynn

In this slightly shortened OST Show today we have special guest Dominic Glynn, not just any old TV and film music composer but a contemporary talent who has indeed created stunning music for Dr Who. Be prepared to spend much of Saturday’s show quivering behind the sofa.

OST 09.11.2011 – KPM Jazz Special

Film, library and television music with Jonny Trunk. Today the OST has an unexpected airing of all three exceptionally rare Clark-Boland Big Band LPs made for KPM. The internationally famous poll winning band included the cream of European and American musicians, but quite why and how they made three LPs for the London based library label is anyones guess. So, Jazz Convention I, II and III, possibly the rarest set of all British library LPs get a full hearing today. Hurrah!
