As part of Myriad Press’ First Fictions Festival at Sussex University, there are several graphic novel related events:
Saturday 21 January 2pm Judging a Graphic Novel Winner of the First Graphic Novel Competition will be announced at the First Fictions Festival. Paul Gravett will scratch the heads of the panel of judges (Ian Rankin, ILYA, Hannah Berry, Corinne Pearlman but not Steve Bell cos he’s on holiday) asking how DO you judge a graphic novel? Pages from the shortlisted works will be shown and the winner announced.
Saturday 21 January 6pm Bryan and Mary Talbot‘s first outing to talk about and show pages from their gorgeous-looking new graphic novel Dotter of Her Father’s Eyes. Laydeez Do Comics creator Nicola Streeten will be asking some very direct questions.
Sunday 22 January 11.30am Autobiography and fiction: graphic novelists Nicola Streeten and Nye Wright will join forces with novelist Sue Eckstein to investigate how their work is informed by their lives.

Storytelling for Comics and Graphic Novels course
You will learn about comic and graphic novel storytelling techniques, and how to create your own visual narrative. Everyone will end the course with one completed comic page, and the skills to continue their work for themselves. We will look at comic and graphic novel art styles, the use of text and images, the “grammar” of comic art, use of sound effects, abstraction, and styles. You provide a story from your own experience, or one you wish to adapt into the medium.
