The last time I saw R Stevie Moore was in September 2007. After many emails and phone calls, getting lost on my cumbersome police motorcycle on the highways of New Jersey, I arrived 4 hours late but was still given a warm welcome – we chatted into the evening, Kris, his parter made me some dinner and Steve and I unfurled our sleeping kit and lay on the studio floor together as he told me he snored and we would sleep in the studio so Krys would not be disturbed. A CD was produced which played on repeat all night – white noise – it was the only way I can get to sleep – Stevie said.

Late 2010, Steve left Bloomfield New Jersey, his home with Krys for 30 or so years and found his way back to Nashville – the town he grew up in – this time, he was homeless. This was to be a blessing, or so it seems, as he re-made and made friends eventually being approached by John Demiglio, a film maker who suggested a documentary on Steve, on one condition; that he would organise a world tour for Steve, along with the Band Tropical Ooze.

Earlier this year, I heard of the plans for the world tour as the money to do the project was raised on line through Kickstarter.com. I got in touch with Mr. Moore and he agreed to meet up in London. I was very fortunate as the itinerary for the tour left us very little elbow room. At 2.15 the tour van rolled up on the last day of the European leg of the tour in Borough High St and we recorded this special edition of Outsider In before they rushed over to do a sound check at the Lexington in Islington.

I put Stevie and the band up in my house (luckily nearby) after the gig. We all had breakfast together – Stevie seemed tired and withdrawn; I guess he was saving his energy for the stage – and it was a superb gig he played the night before. I gave them a hug and waved them off as they went to fly back to the USA to do a final West Coast tour which should prove to be amazing – Ariel Pink is going to play live with Stevie and that is really something to look forward to.

The snares of the State

This man is not on holiday. He is a war hero who has had his young daughter taken away from him and put into care. He had been serving in Gulf War I and II and decorated with a silver star and 5 purple hearts. He cut his thumb off with a chainsaw just before I met up with him in a campsite in Vermont. We hear of his war adventures and meet up with his blind Vietnam Vet buddy. Scott lives in a trailer worth $1000 with his wife – he has no job now – there are many like him.

We also hear an exerpt of an inpromptu gathering of 60 bluegrass musicians who meet up in Nothern Idaho each year to play together.

Finally, James wins $1:60 in a first nation run Casino on the Canadian border.

You find a gaggle of hung over residents of Butte wishing they had not drunk so much after a week of festivities of Evel Kneivel week in a bar in Butte Montana – the best way to deal with this is to drink quantities of Capt. Morgan or Marys. James lapses into a gastly transatlantic drawl as he coaxes real-life stories from his fellow drinkers. This photo was taken at the time of the recording. The other photo is of someone making a BBC documentary just before Mr. Kneivel passed on.

Dave Cloud is a music visionary and the principal of Dave Cloud and The Gospel of Power. You might even have seen him advertising a well-known brand of American beer recently.

By day, Dave’s whiskey voice is used to read books to the blind. By night, he manifests as a high priest of punk-disco. Some call him a shaman, others a lost genius.

On the programe, he plays live over the phone with his band from Nashville. Dave discusses embarassing memories, police torture, his early days as a punk, eating Brazilian cows and other subjects dear to his heart.

James Tregaskis hopes you enjoy hearing some of the new songs Dave has recorded, including “Take you Slow” off Sexton Mings forthcoming album.

Be sure to don your tin foil hat and join James as he is fends off an amusingly refractory Vicki. As a struggling artist, is it not better to be an “insider” or, should one strive to qualify as an “outsider” – simply to retain some integrity? Is the term “outsider musician/artist” a useful one or not?  We will have to leave these questions hanging in mid air for the time being…

Gregory Jacbsen a.k.a Fatty Jubbo has written describing himself – not flattering but he is powerfully creative, prolific painter and performance artist, musician and DJ living in Chicago Illinois. We will hear Gregory in conversation by phone and some of his musical choices as well as some of his own compositions, performing in his bands, “Lovely Little Girls” and “Ritualistic School of Errors” inspired by his own, well… grotesque paintings.
Heironymous Bosch is often repeated parrot like in reviews of his work: I think of artists Richard Dadd and George Grosz, Dali perhaps: insectoid pupae and molluscs with genitals protruding, deformed little girls smeared with brown marks, cakes and copulating miscellaneous body parts, imbeciles looking devotionally upwards – The subconscious mind of midwest America?

Outsider In is a new show On Resonance 104.4 fm

In the first of a new series, presented by James Tregaskis we will hear a live interview with partially deaf instrument tuner Edward Archer Edward demonstrates his own invention live in the studio: the Looni-Corder, a children’s toy which he originally prototyped using a condom.

Edward has released his album “Natures Dream Harp” on vinyl in 1979 and builds and records his own Aeolian Harps.

We will hear them being played and discover how Edward started his interest in building them, we will hear about Cyril Scott, composer and Theosopist.
